Paul Matte
Photographer, artist, and teacher of photography, computer arts, and traditional visual arts.
Brockville, Ontario, Canada
My artwork follows two different paths. The first, traditional photography, investigates the beauty of the 1,000 Islands, the juxtapositions within street photography, and the surreal aspects of life in general. The second and most recent developments are my multi-media, photo-based, wall sculptures. Perhaps because of my experimental fine arts background, I have been growing more and more dissatisfied with the flatness of photography. Having moved into digital photography and Photoshop editing, the concept of layers and space became more and more dominant in my image making. It was in late winter of 2015 that building three-dimensional wooden layers came to fruition.

With the help of juxtapositions, I try to make the ordinary into something intriguing. I believe my compositions are influenced by my interest with the snapshot aesthetic, street photographer Gary Winogrand, surrealist painter Rene Magritte, Canadian photographer Lynne Cohen, and Canadian painter Mimi Matte. The outcome of this blend, for much of my work, brings the snapshot aesthetic into the surreal - where juxtapositions meet within a tidy and sterile stage-like surrounding.
